My husband and I just celebrated nine years together. That got me looking at our old wedding pictures... which got me looking at other wedding pictures. ;-) These are a few of my favorite bride and groom pictures from a few past weddings that I have done. When planning your family portraits it is good to choose your attire carefully. You want to show each individual personality, but you also want the photos to look cohesive.

Here is how I chose our clothes for our family session. I made a dress for my baby girl that I wanted to show off. ;-) So we kind of worked everyone else's outfits to coordinate with her.
I laid out different combinations on the floor until I found a balance of color and pattern that I liked. Below is the result of my fashion work. ;-) Our cute little family...
and then my whole family! We're a good looking group if I do say so myself!

Evolution of a photo...

Some photos come out great and others need a little TLC. During a recent photoshoot with my brother and sister-in-law and their boys we had a couple of photos that required some Photoshop lovin'.
These first two pictures are straight out of the camera. I think its clear why help was needed.
It is often hard to get pictures of families where everyone is looking, happy, no eyes are closed, etc.

I did a little cut and paste to get the best expressions from both photos. What you see below is the cut and paste version.
Here it is after cropping and using the Boost action I downloaded from Pioneer Woman's website.And finally after the final action Heartland, also from Pioneer Woman.

I love this last version best. Definitely an improvement over the originals! ;-)

Just last week I had the pleasure of taking family pictures for our long time First Steps Physical Therapist. She was first Joe's PT and now she is Christine's. We have grown to love her like family (heck, I see her more often than I see most of my friends and family). Every Christmas that we've known her I offer to take their family pictures and she always made excuses why she didn't want her picture taken (not good excuses either!)... she said they haven't had a family picture taken since her kids were in preschool! Now they're hardly kids at all. But she finally took me up on my offer! What a beautiful fall day it was and her family is just delightful!

Adoptive/Foster Parent Special

Over the past couple of years I have been able to see more and more people in my life both adopting and fostering. I have been blessed to see parts of that process. There is so much that goes into it that I was unaware of. I am ever impressed with the amount of patience and love that these everyday people possess to go through all these channels and jump through these hoops to bring these babies and children back and welcome them into their homes and families. God is using them in a huge way!

I was privileged to be a part of a lovely wedding of two young people truly in love. I have known the bride for 10+ years (nearly half of her life!). It was a real blessing for me to be able to help capture their weddings memories.

Special Needs Special

There is a special place in my heart for families with children who have special needs that I am kind of sad to say did not used to be there. While I knew there were families out there who had been blessed with in an unconventional way I was ignorant to the pain and challenges that come with that, as well as the unique joys that follow those challenges and give us respite from the grind, the daily frustrations. God is doing a work in my heart through my son and his disabilities. Some days it all seems like more than I can handle. But then I try to remind myself that 1st Cornithians 10:13 says "There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it." God will only allow me so much to bear. He's there with me, every step of the way. And whatever you are going through right now, He is there with you too.
I share all that to say ; as a mom of a son with serious developmental delays I know how unappealing the thought of going to a photography studio and struggling to get your child to behave long enough to get a couple of good pictures. Or you could go the alternate route of hiring a fancy schmancy photography who will do on-location photography which is far less frustrating than a studio setting and is lovely but you end up paying an arm and a leg.
Therefore, I am offering an ongoing special for families who have special needs. I am extending the same price package that I offer to all my friends and family. The package includes a photography session (up to one hour) at the location of your choice; ie. park, zoo, your own back yard, etc (within 30miles of Indianapolis), digital editing, a copyright release and a CD with the edited images on it. The cost is only $50 for the whole package.

One thing as a photographer that is hard to do yourself is your own pictures(especially when pregnant!). Yesterday I was blessed to have an old friend take maternity/family pix for us! Its hard to believe that I've known Danielle and her family for 15+ years! She now lives in the Tulsa, OK area with her husband and two boys and is a up & coming photographer there as Danielle Huddleston Photography . Here are a few of my favorite shots!Pregnancy can be a challenging time with all the changes that a woman's body goes through. I don't always feel pretty with a 25lb belly. ;-) But looking at these pix, I really feel pretty and that says alot about Danielle's skills. She was great about trying different angles and lighting to make sure the pictures were flattering. Thank you so much for the awesome pictures, Danielle!!! We love them!!

I did pictures recently for a client of my friend who is a doula (labor support). They had just welcomed their second child into the world and were excited to get some new family pictures. Hints & Tips for a Successful Family Photo Session

Helpful Hints For Your Family Portrait Session

~ Keep it Simple! - Solid colors or simple patterns are best. If bringing multiple outfits try to bring a variety of colors, so there is a good contrast from outfit to outfit. *Don't forget to coordinate the same color in outfits for the whole family to keep photos cohesive.

~ For kiddos: Feel free to bring a couple of outfits. Don't forget the basics: socks, shoes, simple accessories, etc. If possible make it clothes that the child likes and is comfortable in. If a kid is comfortable then they are far more likely to cooperate and be happy for pictures!

~ Maternity - a stretchy or button down shirt is good for easily exposing your belly for a few photos. Wear something comfortable and figure flattering to show off your growing belly. Black and white are great colors for maternity pictures - they help draw the attention to your blossoming belly!

~ Favorites ~ A great way to personalize your photo session is to include your sports, hobby, favorite toy or baby blanket, your pet or collectibles or family heirlooms, etc.

~ Just In Case - Its helpful to have a brush/comb, chap stick, makeup, or even spare outfits if you are dealing with babies/toddlers, etc for touch ups during the session.

~ Treats - If you think it would be helpful, bring snacks, treats to help encourage smiles, etc from your children (or husband!).

While there were a couple of minor hiccups throughout the day (the candlelighting made for dark photos of the ceremony and reception), all in all it came together beautifully. Its been a busy weekend for me! Saturday morning I did senior pictures, then that afternoon/evening I did wedding pictures for some college friends' wedding. Then Monday evening I did family pictures for some friends. I have been very pleased with the pictures. I hope the clients are too!
My husband came along to the wedding to help me out. He doesn't really take pictures but he was great about helping me keep to the checklist of photos and he's my tech guy and he showed me a few features on my camera that I didn't know were there. He's so smart.
I also had a an apprentice with me for the family picture shoot. She is eager to learn more about photography and it was very helpful to have an assistant to help with posing and carrying extra stuff - I could get used to that!

Wedding Stuff!

I love all things wedding. I can't help it, I just do! I myself have been happily married for over five years now and yet I still feel compelled to collect wedding things: invitations, programs, magazine clippings, etc. Now, I'm not a total freak, I do have sisters who will benefit from my habit someday. But today I wanted to share a few pix from a wedding I participated in yesterday.
The place settings were lovely! Each place"mat" was a single sheet of 12x12 scrapbook paper! How cute is that?!? * I've also seen them used under center pieces too.
Another thing I love is using monograms on wedding things. This couple had pearl "W"s in the flower arrangements!
Both the bride and groom had been married before and the whole bridal party was made up of their children. They included a sand ceremony that was not just the bride and groom pouring sand together, but also included the kids too. It was really neat.

I am Lawana Penrod, I am the sole photographer, so you will know who will actually be creating your portraits. Your portraits will be of the same quality as the samples you see.

I love what I do, and I have a desire to create something original, that will be very special to you, so you get better photographs that have more sparkle and show more of your personality and life. While I do not have a lot of fancy equipment, I make every effort to create affordable portraits that you will love and treasure for years to come.

What to expect from your photo session:

Location ~ Unforgettable Photography is located on the west side of Indianapolis, Indiana. I am willing to travel within the Indianapolis area and surrounding cities to create your portraits somewhere special to you (travel fee may apply). I want the setting to be some place that expresses your uniqueness: your home, yard, favorite fishing hole, favorite park, etc., somewhere you feel comfortable, not stiff and out-of-place. You won't have the same background as everyone else; instead your background will show YOUR personality. I also have a selection of backdrops for more traditional indoor sessions.

Props ~ I encourage you to have things in your portraits that portray your personality (sports gear/trophies, hobby, pets, musical instruments, or collectables), so they show who you are, not just what you look like. If it is something that will tell a story about your life, it should be considered and probably used for your portrait. Having YOUR props in your portraits will help your portraits show your personality or heritage, keep them from looking like everyone else's, and give them emotional impact.

Time ~ I take time to plan your portrait session with you, so you get exactly what you are looking for. I like to take the time to get acquainted with whoever will be in the portrait before the session and find out what makes him or her happy. I am willing to spend the time with you, before and during your session that is necessary to obtain natural expressions and natural poses for all of your photographic needs. You don't have to wait in line. You always have an appointment so you can be individually helped. This eliminates frustration and doesn't waste your time. With young children, your portrait session can be scheduled for a time when they are their happiest.

Options ~ You get to see your portraits BEFORE they are printed. That way you get the ones YOU like. You may purchase your portraits individually or in packages. There is no minimum or maximum purchase. You may buy as many or as few as you want. You never have to have extra photographs or poses you don't want.

We also offer digital negatives of selected photos on CD. If you choose this option you are given permission to duplicate/print as many photos from the CD, you never have to come back to me for additional prints.

Also available for all portrait sessions at Unforgettable Photography are black and white, color wash and sepia tones. We can also do some minor touch ups and special editing, including adding names and/or phrases to your pictures.

Engagement Pictures

Many couples first consider engagement pictures without having any notion of how to go about it or how to use them, but engagement photo ideas can be traditional, contemporary, or quirky. The key is to find the idea that best illustrates your relationship as a newly engaged couple.

One thing to consider is LOCATION. I like taking the couple downtown and taking pictures by the old buildings. He is also going to bring us into a coffee shop and take a picture of us like sitting at a table looking at each other. It sounds cute. Outside pictures are great too. Like by a lake, by some trees, find an old barn maybe.
Another concern is WHAT TO WEAR... or in some people's case: what NOT to wear! Its generally best not to wear stripes or anything weird but stick to wearing solid colors. My best suggestion is to dress like yourself. I.E. if you wouldn't normally wear a dress, don't do it for the pictures. You want to look nice but still reflect yourself.
Make it PERSONAL. If the couple is getting married at an interesting looking church, you could take a casual photo of them there. Or a photo of them at the exact place where the proposal took place. Maybe a photo of the couple looking at rings at the jewelery store where they purchased the ring. Some couples may want to include pets or hobbies. Of course, the couple may want a photo for the newspaper announcement, so look through various newspapers and see what type of shots look the best.
Consider going DIGITAL. There are many digital effects that can be added to pictures to enhance their beauty. Slideshows with pictures of the couple growing up and pictures of them during their relationship together have become very popular at both weddings and receptions. Also invitations or programs with a carefully chosen engagement picture can be a lovely introduction of the guests to the couple.

Well, I've kind of let photography sit on the back burner the past year since I had my second son last spring. But he's getting to be a big boy and I'm itching for some photography opportunities! I've already got a wedding scheduled in July and a few senior portraits in the works (including my cousin and sister!). So, hopefully spring weather will bring me some jobs along with the sunshine!

Helpful Hints For Your Senior Portrait Session

~ Bring several outfits. Don't forget socks, shoes, simple accessories, etc.
~ Solid colors or simple patterns are best. Bring a variety of colors.
~ Memorabilia ~ Please include your sports, hobby, pet or collectables, etc.
~ Guys should have their hair cut about 1 week before photo session.
~ Please limit yourself to bringing only one person with you to your session.

An expectant mother usually likes to document her pregnancy with maternity portraits. A portrait can be paintings of women or photos taken in a studio. There is a fascination with pregnancy and the changes it brings to the body of a mother.

There are a number of photography studios that focus on pregnancy portraits. Taking a portrait of an expectant mother has become very popular. A pregnancy portrait is not just a souvenir for the baby, but also a way to adapt to your new body image.

Below are a few tips for taking pictures during your pregnancy.

Tip no. 1: During pregnancy, women are not sure what to wear to a maternity photo shoot. Wardrobe should be kept simple to show off the pregnancy. You don’t need to buy an expensive maternity gown.

Tip no. 2: Pregnancy takes the most part of a year, and an expectant mother may want to wait until the third trimester before planning for a maternity portrait. If you take the pictures too soon, it might not get the results you want. The best time to take a maternity portrait is at the end of your term, the seventh or eighth month. A big belly is part of the beauty of a pregnancy.

Tip no. 3: A maternity portrait can be in black and white, color or sepia tones. Choosing color or black-and-white film for a maternity portrait is a matter of preference so choose what you like best.

Tip no. 4: Posing for maternity photos means getting your best side. All photos are usually taken from the side. Photos are usually taken of the mother standing up because the position needs to show the stomach fully. However, other poses can also be done.

We got together toward the end of September and wandered around the beautiful grounds at the Indianapolis Museum of Art taking their engagement pictures. Their so adorable! One of the last really nice days of the season I had a shoot with Darick. We did the pictures on his parents' property and it was just perfect. We did have alot of cooks in the kitchen as the saying goes with his mom and sisters trying to help pose and so on. But all in all I think they turned out pretty well.

I've had alot of fun with some of my seniors. Some are completely relaxed in front of a camera and just totally get into the photo shoot. Others have been a little more work trying to capture the real them. But after awhile even the ones who are just doing their pictures because their mom wants them to end up letting go and enjoying the experience.

What a beautiful day it turned out to be! It was lovely! As always, I was honored to be a part of such a special day. Brett and Megan's bridal party was so fun to work with. I need to hire one of the bridesmaids as my assistant. She was helping to come up with and arrange poses all day. It was great!
